About Us

Our Story

My name is Joi Stahl, and I’m the heart behind the Central California Mermaid Avian Rescue Center—a unique blend of two deep passions: my life as a professional mermaid and my devotion to the colorful, intelligent birds that have come to define my world.

What began in January 2020 as a backyard flock of two curious peacocks quickly evolved into a heartfelt mission. As I learned more about the challenges ornamental and exotic birds face—neglect, abandonment, and the need for specialized care—I knew I had to do more. My flock of two became ten. Then came the ducks, geese, pheasants, lovebirds, finches, cockatoos, macaws, doves, and conures. Each bird has a story, and many now call our bird sanctuary their forever home, especially those needing advanced care or behavioral support.

Affectionately known as Fresno’s Only Black Mermaid, I’ve spent years bringing joy to people of all ages through performance and imagination. But behind the scenes, the rescue work at the Central California Mermaid Avian Rescue is my way of giving back—for every smile I’ve helped create, I offer a safe haven to birds in need.

The Central California Mermaid Avian Rescue Center isn’t just a sanctuary—it’s a celebration of color, compassion, and second chances in the realm of exotic bird rescue. Thank you for joining us on this magical journey.

Pablo, one of our resident showoffs at the Central California Mermaid Avian Rescue, is always a sight to see! Be sure to check out his brother Escobar in other news, as they both thrive in our bird sanctuary dedicated to exotic bird rescue.
