My name is Joi Stahl, and I’m the heart behind the Central California Mermaid Avian Rescue Center—a unique blend of two deep passions: my life as a professional mermaid and my devotion to the colorful, intelligent birds that have come to define my world. 

Birds have been a part of my life for more than 20 years. During that time, I've cared for and worked with a wide range of companion parrots—from tiny budgies and cockatiels to African greys, cockatoos, and the magnificent Hyacinth Macaw. My experience has been shaped through years of hands-on care, specialized avian education, extensive research, and volunteer work with multiple bird rescue organizations. Every bird has reinforced one lesson: rehabilitation requires patience, compassion, and a commitment to understanding each bird as an individual.

What began in January 2020 with two curious peacocks in my backyard soon became something much greater. As I became more involved with ornamental and exotic birds, I witnessed firsthand the growing need for specialized rescue services in California's Central Valley. Birds were being surrendered because of behavioral challenges, medical needs, financial hardship, or simply because their owners were no longer able to care for them. I couldn't turn away.

Two birds quickly became ten. Then came ducks, geese, pheasants, pigeons, doves, finches, lovebirds, conures, cockatoos, macaws, and many more. Today, Central California Mermaid Avian Rescue Center provides rescue, rehabilitation, sanctuary, and adoption services for birds throughout the region. While many of our residents eventually find loving forever homes, others remain with us permanently because of their medical, behavioral, or special care needs.

Many people know me as Fresno's Only Black Mermaid, a title earned through years of bringing joy, creativity, and imagination to my community. But beyond the mermaid tail is another passion—advocating for birds that often have no voice. Through this rescue, I've found a way to combine compassion, education, and service by giving vulnerable birds the second chance they deserve.

At Central California Mermaid Avian Rescue Center, we believe every bird has value, every feather tells a story, and every life deserves the opportunity to thrive. Whether through rescue, rehabilitation, education, or adoption, our mission is to create brighter futures for the birds entrusted to our care—and to inspire others to do the same.
